ESPN is billing the matchup tonight between the Nuggets and the Cavs as a showcase of the next big rivalry in the NBA, going so far as to say "two rookies quickly becoming the face of the league". . .Set aside that ESPN is probably more marketing company than sports reporting company these days. . .this "rivalry" is rather ridiculous for a variety of reasons. . . First of all, it's the NBA so no one cares. . .the NBA is at an all time low for viewship and market share. . .so even if this is the next big NBA rivalry (quick-what's the current big rivalry? yeah Shaq-Kobe and they play on the same team. . .the irony kills me), it really doesn't matter. . . Secondly, can these two really have a rivalry when they play on two of the worst teams in the league? A real rivalry was Magic-Bird, always playing each other in the playoffs, always rising to the next level in games against the other. . .that's a rivalry. . .and it's no coincidence that the era they played in was really the heyday of the NBA. . .Jordan brought it back for a while but it was never the same as Magic-Bird. . .LeBron and Carmelo play on two of the worst teams in the league. . .these two teams won 34 games COMBINED last season. . .they had identical records of 17-65. . .this is not the stuff that legends are made of. . .Cleveland has yet to win a game this season even with the first half of the above rivalry, though they have a good chance tonight since Denver is 2-2. . . And last but certainly not least, both these players have to turn into something other than your average NBA player. . .while this may in fact happen, it's years off. . .Sure, they both look good at times but are they worthy of the hype? How long did it take for Kevin Garnett and Kobe to develop into the superstars they are today? Some rivalry this looks to be. . .
It is rather amusing though that a game with two teams posting identical 17-65 records last year is getting this much press just because of two 18 year old kids. . .ESPN is certainly getting their money's worth. . . |
