For the last four or five days, for one reason or the other, I haven't gotten around to opening up my news aggregator here at home. And like the calls of obnoxious creditors, it became easier and easier to not do it in hopes it would go away. However, also like those calls, the longer you wait, the worse it gets when you actually have to deal with it. So this morning, I bit the bullet and opened it up to find 420 some odd items awaiting my rapt attention. Now, I'm trying to decide which feeling was worse: the nagging feeling of anxiety concerning something bad but unknown that can be pushed away with other pursuits or the overwhelming feeling of being hopelessly suffocated by an avalance of information I can never expect to escape from. And to compound problems, I start from the bottom which means Steven Den Beste is number three. Reading his two posts took an hour. Ack, I am even more behind, I have actually lost time reading those two somehow. And then the epiphany hits me in a blazing shock of coffee and aftershave. Go to the category labeled "Blogs on the Left" and choose "Mark all as read". Woohoo! Down 150 or so already. Plus, I don't have to mess with reading things I don't agree with. Do the same with Instapundit, The Volokh Conspiracy, Crooked Timber, CenterField and ChicagoBoyz, all blogs I read at work and now I'm down to a much more managable 123. Of course, the rest of my day is already accounted for and by tonight, Instapundit alone will have moved this number back up into the 200 range. It's a rat race I tell you, a rat race. |
