Children at risk: state trends 1990-2000
This report at the Ann E. Casey Foundation web site "looks at changes in 11 key measures of child well-being between 1990 and 2000. Changes are provided on a state-by-state basis, and national figures are presented with state figures to help readers quickly ascertain whether a state has improved more than average over the 1990s and which dimensions of children’s lives have changed the most over the past decade." Mission closes recovery programs (Canada)
Kamloops Daily News story on the closing of the New Life Mission's drug and alcohol recovery programs, as they were "drowning in debt and too much space."

State accepts $70 million bailout for Medicaid (Washington)
News Tribune story on the acceptance by Washington state officials of a $70 million federal bailout for Medicaid, less than a third of what they wanted. "Despite the setback," notes the story, "they say they won't make drastic cuts - at least for now."

New NIMH Director Named
NIH press release on the appointment of Thomas R. Insel, M.D., as Director of the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Insel is currently Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, and is expected to begin his appointment in mid-November.

One in three fear mental health laws (UK)
BBC story on a survey for the charity Mind which showed that "mMore than one in three people would not seek medical help for depression if proposed mental health laws are introduced," and that "concerns about the measures were even higher amongst the young, where 52% said they would not seek medical help for a mental health problem." See also the epxNews story on plans by Mind to launch a campaign against the bill in its current form.
