Sign me up. I'll take two. DRM -- Do Readers MatterAlso from today's Bulletin in an article titled: "PAGEWING OFFERS XML-BASED BOOK PUBLISHING" --OpenText, developer of Web-based collaboration and knowledge-management platform LiveLink, announced a partnership this week with digital rights management developer Alchemedia that will integrate the two companies' main offerings. OpenText will sell and support Alchemedia's Mirage digital rights management software, which will be offered to potential customers as a DRM component to the LiveLink platform. Mirage is ideally suited for use internally by corporations, businesses or government agencies to protect against intellectual property theft. [Seybold Report] Digital Rights Management is a black hole for the publishing industry and the consumer market. It's tolerable, maybe even understandable, on certain corporate systems where secrecy is imperative. But generally the systems are so user-hostile no one will use a DRM-protected document or system. There's never been any tenet of copyright that granted the owner unlimited control over a user's actions as DRM systems attempt to do. Not sure what the answer is, but DRM as delivered today isn't it.
