Soros, it appears, is involved in a lot more than the Budapest Open Access Initiative.  I found that Arizona is one of the states Soros has targeted for helping "America Come Together"  - you can read this news story from here.  Soros own opinion piece The Bubble of American Supremacy, published in The Atlantic Monthly (in which the classic As We May Think was also published) last year provides interesting and provocative views about his notion of open societies and globalization.  Apparently his support of open access to scholarly knowledge is just one small piece in a much larger plan. comment []6:52:55 PM
