Thabo Takes It
The ANC gets the vote of confidence of 70% of South African voters, in a relatively high poll (77%), pretty much as I predicted, from a distance, a few weeks ago. The opposition is virtually wiped out, especially the NNP, which got fewer votes than Patricia De Lille's new party; good riddance! One has to admit that the ANC has a firm grip on the electorate, and their grass-roots organizing ability seems to be in excellent shape. The IEC apppears to have got its act together, and comes in for some praise, there was no violence, and all in all, SA is behaving like a mature democracy, except, of course, that most mature democracies have a effective opposition to keep the government honest.
The Sunday Times editorial gives the ANC some good advice, quite sensible I thought.
