When you land in New Zealand you will undergo a
change. You will stop being English or Welsh or Scottish or Irish and
you will become a Pom. Try not to behave like one.
The
defining characteristic of the Pom is whingeing. Moaning that the tea
is weak, the beer sweet, the newspapers thin, the bacon fat. Behind
that moaning lies an assumption and behind that assumption lies a
thoughtless arrogance. It assumes not only that New Zealand ought to be
like Britain but also that it aspires to be like Britain. It doesn't,
not any more.
