Two Colts Pursue Carjacker, Shots Fired

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two Indianapolis Colts gave chase -- and were fired on -- after a sport utility vehicle belonging to one of the football players was stolen at gunpoint last week. The stolen vehicle eventually wrecked, and the accused robber was taken into custody. Indianapolis Star coverage.

 

Two Couples Sue SF's Newberry Over Bar Fight

SAN FRANCISCO – 49ers center Jeremy Newberry, who last month denied his involvement in a Memorial Day outing fight, is being sued by two couples in a separate incident where Newberry is again the alleged center of a fight. The couples claim they were beaten when a fight broke out after they accused Newberry and a female friend of taking reserved seats at a table and refusing to move when asked. Miami's Williams Downplays Recent Police Encounters

MIAMI – Running back Ricky Williams says he doesn't want to play the race card but other Dolphins claim some Miami players are being racially profiled. Williams has had encounters with the police four times since being traded to Miami earlier this year. Miami Herald coverage.

While in Rehab, 49ers' Sutherland Pleads Not Guilty to DUI Charges

Vinny Sutherland, a 49ers punt returner and reserve wide receiver, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to drunken driving and hit-and-run charges in the crash of his sport-utility vehicle last month. Sutherland faces up to two years in county jail if convicted on all the charges, which include driving with a suspended license following a previous drunken driving arrest last September in San Mateo County. Ex-Bear Avellini Arrested in Bar Fracas

CHICAGO -- Former Bears quarterback Bob Avellini is free on a $100 bond after he allegedly used a golf club to smash the glass door of a North Side tavern after employees would not let him back inside. Chicago Tribune coverage.

KU's Teddleton's Battery Trial Delayed

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas University junior football player Brock Teddleton, who has been charged with misdemeanor battery, will return to Douglas County District Court on July 29 so a trial date can be set. Teddleton, a defensive tackle, was charged following an investigation into a March 9 fight at Jack Flanigan's Bar and Grill, 806 W. 24th St. The alleged victim was a 19-year-old KU student.

Cincy Basketball Recruit Winged in Playground Fight

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Highly regarded University of Cincinnati basketball recruit Eric Hicks was shot in the left leg during a fracas in a neighborhood park in his native Greensboro, N.C., just after 1 a.m. last week. Hicks, whose injury did not require surgery, is expected to be on crutches for the remainder of this week and will not be able to play basketball for at least 2-4 weeks. Cincinnati Enquirer coverage.
