Public Place Network
Companies like Intel and IBM are working together to extend an 802.11 network across the country. The network would provide wireless access in public places like airports. It seems that other public places where wireless extension might make sense could include libraries, courthouses, state offices, universities, maybe even state parks. It may make sense for public entities to partner with these kinds of businesses in developing a more comprehensive strategy to extend wireless access. FreeNetworks has a list of wireless networks that are being developed around the country.
At the same time, security will continue to grow as an issue of importance. Hackers are increasingly interested in the hobby of "wardriving." Entire sites are now being developed on the topic, complete with equipment recommendations and strategies. If states and other governmental entities participate in the extension of wireless, they MUST resolve the security issues.
The University of Utah has established a wireless network group.
