There are a couple ways we currently keep productive away from our desks.
- Bring a laptop
- Sync data with a PDA
- Find an exising computer and connect to your desk.
For the most part, I use number 2 and 3. I carry my Handspring Visor Edge and I VPN into my computer at work from home or vice versa.
Here's a thought though... why not strip all of the power hungry portions of the power to stick in a pocket and allow your desktop / server to move with you. Make the device fit in your pocket or bag and give it shortrange wireless - Bluetooth and WiFi with Universal Plug and Play.
Any nearby wireless device - a phone, pda, laptop, or desktop could be used to access the contents.
Meanwhile, the device lasts all day because it runs a low power processor. It has no physical input or output connections - no keyboard, no mouse, no standard display.
You bring your data with you. It is a portable hard disk with all of your personal data on it and nothing to plug in.
That is the idea behind Roy Want's project at Intel Research - Ubiquity Strategic Research Project.
