An incredible summary over at Microdoc News about the dynamics of a blogosphere story.  I love when the characteristics of success of a concept are boiled down to the bare essentials.  My favorite snips below:

"What is a blogosphere story?
Weblogs by nature are highly interlinked sources of information which capture a weblog writer's opinion on a topic in a single post and interlink that opinion to other weblogs and sources of information.

Through a mixture of opinion and interlinking with other sites a reader of weblogs can sample a wide range of opinions and can identify what is important about a particular topic.

Each weblog post is not meant to be a complete story in itself, but rather is part of a larger story that develops across a number of weblogs and other information sources to build what we call a blogosphere story."

"How a Story Develops
We have noted four types of blog posts:

  1. Lengthy opinion and molding of a topic around between three to fifteen links with one of those links the instigator of the story;
  2. Vote post where the blogger agrees or disagrees with a post on another site;
  3. Reaction post where a blogger provide her/his personal reaction to a single post on another site;
  4. Summation post where the blogger provide a summary of various blogs and perspectives of where a blog story has got to by now."

"Okay, here's my latest piece of shitty software. With bugs!
Want to know how it works? Check it out." [via Scripting News]

Very neat stuff - merge Google's API with Dave's weblog and get relevant results from his postings!

"Today's new idea.

Good morning. I've been emailing with Dave Sifry and Larry Lessig about the new app I'm working on. I want to use it as a test case to explore the issues of documenting a new idea so that it shows up in prior art searches. And it might not be a new invention, maybe it has been done before. That should be part of the process. A developer should be able to say, "This might be an invention. Help me figure out if it is."

Now that said, I doubt if it has been done before because it combines two things that are relatively new -- weblogs and the Google API. It uses the fact that URLs in a weblog have structure. They're not without meaning. And the Google API returns, among other information, a set of URLs. Sites like Scripting News, with an archive going back to 1997, will have new utility.

Anyway, if this is as popular as I think it's going to be, I'll have to ask Google to up the limit on my key, or maybe give them the code to run on their server.

It's going to be a light day here. I want to get the programming done. And I'm going to tease you. So if you don't like teases, come back later today, early afternoon Eastern time is a good bet. Tomorrow morning is a sure thing.

Heh. I almost forgot to add: Murphy-willing. ";->"
