Los Angeles, how I've missed you!

In a few moments I'll be packing up my laptop and heading down to Sioux Falls so that I can catch my flight home to L.A.  When something you've been looking for is this close you have to keep pinching yourself!  So - what will I do while I'm there that I couldn't do here?

First, I'm going to buy books.  I will find a way to make it up to the city to lurk in a cosy L.A. bookstore and buy some stuff that is virtually impossible to get outside of Amazon or mail order in South Dakota.

Second, I'm going to gorge myself on some sushi.  Spider Rolls, here I come!

Third, I'm going to kick it with friends.  After several (3) weeks of finishing work and going to a hotel to read until bedtime I've been dying to be around my diverse crew of friends for some good talk and relaxing.

Fourth, I'm going to read some magazines I haven't been able to get here in Brookings - specifically the Atlantic Monthly and The Economist.  Those amongst others...

Fifth, I'm going to hang out in a coffee house.  Can you believe there are no coffee houses here?  Not even in Sioux Falls!

But barring the food, isolation, loneliness and lack of coffee houses, I'm having a good time. <wink!>

Right now it's 3:30 pm CST (1:30 pm PST), so I'll be ambling into my driveway at around 1:45 am CST (11:45 pm PST).  Roughly 11 or so hours, but when dealing with air traffic the standard deviation of approximation is quite high.

Debating Orwell

"... capitalism IS restored to Animal Farm, when Napoleon invites Farmer Jones and the humans to come back. I think it's even renamed Manor Farm."

Hitchens is having at a few questions posted on Andrew Sullivan's Book Club.

Last weekend, I posted about a new book by Christopher Hitchens called Why Orwell Matters.  I will probably end up with the book this weekend when I'm finally in a good position to acquire it (more about that later).  To revisit Orwell I read Animal Farm again last weekend - I may, under the best circumstances finish 1984 on my way back to Los Angeles.  In the very least I'll be reading some of his essays that I found on this helpful George Orwell site.  I have some new observations on Animal Farm that I will be posting at length about in the near future.  These mainly concern the inflexible myopia of thinking the book only applied to Soviet Communism.
