A Java Apologist on Speed

The infamous "Pet Store" application, a demonstration of cutting edge technologies was first pioneered by the folks over at Sun, meant to light the path for those interested in using Java.  When Microsoft released .NET, they rewrote the Pet Store using their technology and came out quite a bit ahead.  So after this bantering, a third party, The Middleware Company, decided to implement the benchmark for themselves.  It should be noted that The Middleware Company is historically Java bent, not Microsoft.

Java got its ass kicked.

I'd be mad too, especially if my competitors product ran as fast as mine on a two processor machine when mine was using a four processor one.

So I get an email newsletter from Rick Ross of Javalobby explaining why Java sucked:

First, it doesn’t matter much if one platform is three times as fast as it needs to be and another is five times as fast as it needs to be.

Hm... web applications can use speed, more than almost any other type of app I can think of besides games.  Nothing is fast enough at this point - not until the web app performs like a standard exe on your local system.

Second, it is not so impressive that the monopolist has managed to eke raw speed out of their thin veneer of interfaces on top of the underlying Windows operating system.

There we go with the 'monopolist' argument.  In this case, one can't complain about integration - *everyone does it*.  Perhaps he should write to Oracle for having an internet application server as well as a database.  Or to IBM for the same thing.

Third, anyone who adopts .NET is taking a giant leap into bed with one of the most assiduously committed monopolists in history.

Ah, the real reason.  Javalobby hates Microsoft, not because their technology is better but because they believe Microsoft is a monopolist.  "Use crap just because it's not Microsoft" - I've heard that before.

On the first page of The Pragmatic Programmer, there is an exercise that Rick Ross et. al. should have done before sending this email:

Challenge -
How do you react when someone—such as a bank teller, an auto mechanic, or a clerk—comes to you with a lame excuse? What do you think of them and their company as a result?
