My Achilles
Exactly one year ago today a cast protecting my torn Achilles came off. I will never forget coming home and before doing anything else taking a long shower. Of course I did bathe when I had the cast on but it was usually big man gymnastics trying to keep it dry. I will never forget spending five months on crutches. Some novel things if you've never had the experience:
1. You cannot get your own drink. After a while you get used to wedging the crutch into your armpit and balancing a cup but this doesn't work in public. Trust me.
2. Aisles in aircraft are too thin to crutch back and forth in. Avoid liquids, use the bathroom before boarding and crutch sideways until you reach your seat. When the aircraft lands, simply wait 20 minutes for everyone else (including the couples with infants) to exit before you try to get off.
3. Don't even think of crutching on snow or ice.
4. Use an over the shoulder bag at grocery stores and any other locations in which you need to carry items. Do not expect more than 10 items to put you at maximum capacity.
So much can change in a year. The good news is that I'm fine now. Even though I'm aware of my Achilles when it's stiff (usually after waking) or sore (usually whenever I do something active), I can do all that I did before and because I've been diligent in exercise I'm in better condition as well.
