Today, I went to dinner with the Fabulous Miss F. We had planned to go to Rice, but they were closed. Next we tried Cafe Leibowitz; closed. Bread? Closed. We couldn't deal with the attitude at Gitane, so we headed down to Chinatown.
The Fabulous Miss F knows all of the best places in Chinatown, and we decided to go for Vietnamese at Nha Trang. We thought that restaurants in that neighborhood would be open, but surprise! It was closed. Thankfully, next door was Thai Son, another great Vietnamese place.
Once wading our way past fifteen clueless but hopeful patrons, we ordered:
- Summer rolls
- Bo Luc Lac (beef cube salad)
- Crispy squid
- Soda with egg yolk and condensed milk
- Lemonade
The food was delightful as the service was surly and harried. Marvelous, in other words. The summer rolls were cool and fresh, with fat shrimp tightly wrapped up, begging to be dipped in the numerous sauces on our table. The crispy squid were hot and light, some of the nicest fried seafood we've ever tasted. And the beef cube salad was, after what seemed to be an interminable delay, tender, hot, and surrounded by mildly sauteéd onions. Superb.
Highly recommended for excellent food, sans decor or service. At a shade over $20 for two, it's a steal.
