I'm only now recovering from my testing extravaganza. After months of preparation, I sat for the DELF at the Alliance Française in New York City, on Friday. I woke up at six, got ready, and went across the street to my neighborhood French bakery to get coffee and snacks... only to discover that it wasn't open yet. The omens did not look good, at least from the alimentary perspective.
I arrived at the Alliançe at 8:15 and made idle chitchat with a few other students. One of them, John, was in his sixties and was taking French so that he could work with French organizations in his retirement. Another, Christine, worked for a Japanese bank and wanted more worldwide job prospects. Everyone was friendly.
And then the exam started. Just after 9am, each section taking between 60 and 90 minutes. The problem was, only a five minute break was granted between each test; no-one had time to eat lunch, only to nibble at their snacks. I was glassy-eyed by three o'clock, and still had three hours left.
