A friend recently had a question put to him about the benefits of posting an article on his own web site in lieu of submitting it to a legal publisher.

The primary benefit of being published in a known magazine or other periodical is that there is some degree of sponsorship or recommendation inherent in the fact of publication.  The fact that the Transgendered Pederasty Law Journal has published Joe Johnson's article on the constitutionality of anti-coprophagy legislation means that the TPLJ has approved his article and finds it worthy of consideration by its esteemed readership.  When Joe posts it on his web site, all that means is that Joe has a web site and wants to say something about anti-coprophagy laws.

That of course is balanced against several detriments, all of which Joe avoided by posting the article on his web site, including:

1.  The journal will take from 3 to 9 months to publish Joe's article.
2.  It likely will limit him to a set length of anywhere from 1,500 to 2,500 words.
3.  It may engage in what is politely call "editing", in which the article is cut to ribbons and repasted together in an incoherent fashion, with many outright deceptive or ignorant subtitles and sidebars added.

The choice is Joe's to make.
