One of the benefits of technology, we all know, is that it increases efficiency.  And God knows that we value efficiency in today's economy.

Yet we condemn laziness as a major vice.  Whether it is in connection with work or with personal life, laziness is castigated as an evil.  Sloth, we are told, is one of the seven deadly sins.

Not so fast.  The lazy man is the one who will maximize efficiency.  The tight-assed sedulous production machine will keep doing the same job in the same way for years.  It takes a real lazy man to figure out that there is a way to do it more easily, particularly if technology can be harnessed to help in the effort.  We should all give a word of thanks to the lazy man.  He is always the one who determines how the machine can run or how the job can be done most efficiently.  And we who use technology widely recognize and admire his instincts.
