Following a lead from a John C. Dvorak column in PCMag (the print version), I have tried for weeks to download a copy of Squeak. I finally got through today, and nabbed a copy. Squeak runs "bit-identically" on Windows, Macs, Linux, BSD and more. (Side note: it's as easy a program installation as I've seen under Windows, being essentially self-contained.)
Designed by Alan Kay, Squeak is based on Smalltalk-80; it is not a toy, but it can make eToys. (Too many links for you? Just start at Squeakland.)

EWeek reports that Apple and IBM are developing 64-bit PowerPC processors, promising 3 or 4 times the performance of Moto's current rocks -- but not for as least a year. Besides its role in Apple servers and desktops, the new chips will also power future high-end Linux-based systems from IBM. The eWeek article hints at a "new bus architecture on tap for future Macs."
