Yesterday I thought it would be a good time to upgrade my W2K version of Apache from 2.0.40 to 2.0.43. One of the nice benefits of open source is a fairly consistent release of new versions.
In order to install the new version you must first remove the old one. No problem there. However, after installing the new release the service would not start. I ran apache.exe directly and found the problem - PHP. I would get an error "apache: module "c:php4buildsnapsapiapache2filtersapi_apache2.c is not compatible with this version of Apache..."
In doing some research it appears that this new release of Apache requires PHP 2.3.0. However, a little research on the internet usually results on a working alternative or solution to the problem.
One of the areas to watch with open source is the integration of packages. This is where a virtual machine environment would be handy. It would give you an easy way to test various upgrades without having to mess with your working environment.
Today I will download the latest PHP and see if this resolves the problem.
