Here is a great article from InfoWorld discussing some workable enterprise operating system strategies.  Of course Linux is there.

There is another great article So long, Wintel that addresses enterprise strategies.

I successfully upgraded (installed) the 2.0.43 version of Apache on W2K.  The difficulty was with PHP.  There are two ways to do this.  One is to just copy the php4ts.dll from the new PHP 4.3.0 build and to change the httpd.conf file to point to the new php4apache2.dll included with the 4.3.0 build.

The approach I took was to install the complete PHP 4.3.0, change the php.ini and httpd.conf files to point to the new 4.3.0 location.  I removed Apache 2.0.40 (which keeps the config files) and then installed the new Apache 4.0.43.  Worked great.  I did remove the Apache monitor program that is inserted in the startup folder as I don't want to see this in the system tray all the time.  The apache service starts up automatically.  Everything checkes out and both software packages are up to current standards.
