Before solving a problem think a bit to find out if there isn't a larger problem wanting to be solved
I can relate to Kryzstof's tip, having seen too many software developers over the past 10 years write code to solve a particular problem, later to find that they need to extend it to help solve other problems. I think it might have been situations like this that led to the term "spaghetti code".
I do believe that the planning of software projects could also benefit from following this style of thinking. The planning process is typically driven by meeting with the target audience and finding out what they want and how/when they are willing to pay for it. The problem to watch out for is software projects that address the immediate wants of the target audience, before considering their true needs. In some cases, what the target audience wants may not even make sense, but I digress...
