New OS X Power Management Setting for Presentations: There have always been a number of tricks to help you maximize the life of your PowerBook or iBook, but Jaguar makes it much easier by including a handful of Energy Saver settings designed specifically for some very common situations (both with and without power adapter). For example, in Presentations mode, the display won't sleep even if you are not using a power adapter.

New Fuel Cells Get Airline Approval: A new power technology for laptops uses tiny fuel cells which are powered by methanol and can last 2-40 hours rather than the 2-4 hours conventional battery technology offers.  The latest hurdle that has been achieved is a version safe enough for the airlines to allow them on commercial flights.  I can't wait!

Big news today for Rendezvous and our continued support of open standards....

Apple “Open Sources” Rendezvous

“Rendezvous is a major innovation in IP networking that creates dynamic networks of computers, devices and software applications with zero user configuration,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “By supporting an open standards process and providing open source software that is available today, Apple is encouraging the rapid adoption of Rendezvous technology.”

Here's a feature that many people have overlooked. The user interface for Keychain Access enjoys several improvements and one that I rely on all the time for my PowerBook is the ability to lock your keychain and most importantly, your screen, directly from the menu bar.
To enable this feature, open Keychain Access and choose "Show Status in Menu Bar" from the View menu.

The Tale of Two Get Info's. There are two very strong views about how the Get Info... command should work. The first camp wants to be able to compare the info of different files at the same time, so every time you choose Get Info... a new window is displayed (just like Mac OS 9). The other camp wants the "Inspector" behavior where the info window is a single floating palette that always reflects the current selection.

What to do? Well, in Jaguar, the default is to spawn an info window for each Get Info command but hold down the Option key and the command morphs to "Show Info", the floating palette version. The crowd cheers - everyone is happy!

WTC Rebuilding Notes From Louis Epstein:

Right after yesterday's email Michael Smerconish reminded me,
as I had noted to the list once before, that he will be guest-hosting
the national Jim Bohannon radio show tonight, and will focus on rebuilding
the WTC for the first hour, which starts at 10 PM Eastern.
A representative of Team Twin Towers will be on the show,
and we hope Smerconish will find time to mention our rally,
ONE WEEK FROM TODAY.

A web article that needs pro-Towers responses:
http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/dhenninger/?id=110002383
So far pro-Towers responses posted on the website are a minority.
We need to have our voices heard!

(Robert Bartley's pro-building,though not explicitly pro-Towers,
column at that site September 23rd has drawn no responses that
explicitly urge very tall towers either).

I note that the New York Observer has come out with an
editorial urging that the whole site be left as an empty
memorial.Criticism of this attitude should be sent to
editorial@observer.com.

The time each of you spends making your voice heard may
be what saves(brings back) the Towers, whether it's writing
an email or attending our rally.Silence is what lets the
other side win.

The parks department rally permit has been picked up.
Volunteers and potential speakers, please contact me!
