The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted and proclaimed at the United Nations on December 10th, 1948: "... every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction."


[Item Permalink] Omar Khayyam and the Muhammad cartoons -- Comment()
My column on the Finnish cowardness regarding the Danish cartoons about islamistic fundamentalism appeared today (in Finnish, Nettisensuuria Omar Khaijamin jalanjäljissä). What happened reminds me of Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), a scientist and poet whose philosophy was quite different from official Islamic dogmas. In the end, Khayyam had to resort to self-censorship to survive.
