Eclipse 2.1 M5 Released.
Eclipse, open source Java IDE used by WebSphere, keeps rolling ahead. M5, the last 2.1 milestone release, is out and its got tons of little usability features (see its list of new and noteworthy features). I predict that Eclipse will become the second most popular IDE behind Microsoft's Visual Studio, and the most popular among open source developers. Its popularity will move beyond the Java community to include C, C++, Perl, Python, PHP, and others.

Agreed - it could even become the number one IDE due to its cross platform, vendor, tool and language nature.
There's already plugins for C/C++, C#, COBOL and Python as well as XML, UML, Axis, Struts, Ant, JUnit etc. The community behind eclipse, creating plugins and support for new languages and tools is very impressive.
With Erich Gamma and Kent Beck writing a new book entitled Contributing To Eclipse, I wonder if we can expect a new Test Driven development model to be integrated into eclipse?
BTW if you've not seem them yet, do take a look at these cool demos?
