Paper-thin Slices of Life (12:54:12 PM)
[an aside - it is pouring rain here in Boston! There was an article (link probably only good until 6/24/03) in today's Globe about all the weekend rain]
I have always loved short stories. The good ones use a very economical amount of wordspace to provide a window into a much richer space than they explicitly describe, and this just feels like magic to me, a lot like the way haiku or other short poems can thrum up deep emotions with few words (or B.B. King can do the same with a few notes :)). When I was a kid, I had a book called "100 Great Science Fiction Short-Short Stories" which I treasured.
A friend pointed me at this site, which reminded me of this kind of thing. It's an annual contest for short stories of fewer than 55 words(!). Check it out.
