My e-mail is out of control.  I use Eudrora Pro which has a lot of tools for filtering and mailbox management.  That's good but it's not enough.

I am not talking about spam - I can handle spam easily with the delete key.

In the old days we lived in Lotus 123, then in Word.  Now most of us live in our inbox.  I need to quickly move messages to the proper place(s) and then be able to call them up using a variety of criteria - keywords, date, sender, etc.

Simson Garfinkel (yep, that’s his real name) from MIT has some good ideas for handling this.  He proposes that our e-mail client only have 2 buttons - Keep and Delete.

When you click on Keep, the message should be indexed and moved to an appropriate mailbox (or more than one).  You could then use patterns or search queries (like in Google) to pull up all the messages from Sam or Sue about the Acme project from last week.

The Delete would move the message to a database for a week or so before purging - just in case.

Microsoft is working on software called Personal Map which analyzes your stored e-mail and automatically identifies and groups your messages.

Ximian is working on an open source program called Evolution that will manage virtual folders (vFolders) of your e-mail.

Sign me up for the beta tests.  I’m ready.
