RIAA apologizes for threatening letter. The Recording Industry Association of America apologizes to Penn State University for sending an incorrect legal notice of alleged Internet copyright violations. [CNET News.com]

Every citizen of this country ought to understand the damage the DMCA can and is unleashing on the unsuspecting person. It is not unlikely that we may one day have to shut down our Universities, shut down our class rooms because RIAA and its legion of lawyers are doing a witch hunt. Each one of us should write to our congressmen and senators and throw this stupid law out. If it is continued to reign a time will come when you can not sit in our class rooms nor could anyone teach or do research.

Imagine, a fully wired class room or a distance learning environment where you have the participants discuss a published paper, a song, a painting, a software, etc., and the central IT administration shuts the system down because they received cease and desist order from RIAA! It can happen. Until the situation is resolved, which could take weeks, you have no recourse. No teaching, research, or for that matter no work can be executed! That is the price of progress and the power of congressional ignorance!
