Political Destiny Happened to drop by the Guildford County board of elections at lunch today to see when I could officially file to run in the District 7 County Commissioner's race. Just so happens that today at 10:00 the powers that be had a meeting in which they determined the candidate filing period will be April 26th to May 7th...baring any additional lawsuits. While I was at the BOE I had a brief chat with the director of our Guilford County BOE George Gilbert. I mentioned that the state BOE website did not show me as a registered voter, whereas just outside his office I had confirmed with his Guilford BOE staff that I was. George replied, "The State BOE voter registration system is all screwed up, even my name does not show in there!" Hmm. Kinda makes you feel good about electronic voting. Walking back out of Mr. Gilbert's office there was at-large commissioner Mike Barber standing in the open office area. Not sure what the Karma is but it appears that not only do Mike Barber and I share the urge to urinate at the same time, but apparently we also share the urge to run for the same political seat at the same time. Small talking, I let Mike know I was going to run for County Commissioner in Mary Rakestraw's district. He said, "County Commissioner? Boy, that's a real easy job, eh?" Then getting the wheels turning he added, "What party are you going to run for?" When I said, "Libertarian." We both smiled and wished each other a good day. Poor Mary Rakestraw, the popular Sheriff is against her, the local/regional paper will undoubtedly back her Democratic challenger and now a crazed but credible Libertarian is going to enter the race and really screw the campaign planning up. I like the fact that technically, outside the BOE, the first person I officially announced my candidacy to is one of my likely opponents. 5:27:34 PM![]() |
