Hockey Night with the Gambinos

Have Wayne Gretzky and Pete Rose ever bet against each other?

This much I know from having been in Detroit at the time when a Lugaci Limousine driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his vehicle full of Russian hockey stars and recent Stanley Cup champions into a tree in the median of Woodward Avenue:

One of the players, the Gordie Howe of Russia, had just a few weeks earlier signed his name on a open letter to President Yeltsin stating that he, along with the other Russian hockey players on the letter's list, feared for their lives if they were to return to Russia and play in the Olympics under the current Russian coach they knew had strong ties to the Russian mafia.  The letter was discussed publicly on Hockey Night in Canada during an intermission of a Stanley Cup playoff game.

Another player in the car a few years earlier had magically been spirited off the Red Army team as a teenage defector.  He was just lucky to have some very nice people that wanted to give him a chance to play on the famous Detroit Red Wings.  His benefactors were humble international hockey fans doing a good deed...no strings attached.

Organized crime in Hockey?  Well, probably not much worse than any other sport.

The John Birch Society and Morality

The lastest issue of our flagship magazine The New American has started to arrive in mailboxes.  Title:  "The Real American Cowboy" - a response to all the awards being heaped on Brokeback Mountain.

I know I am going to have to field some questions on this.  Our boys at HQ though have helped out with this video clip with the JBS position on morality.

Sidebar:  Seriously, you know the fix is in when Brokeback Mountain totally stomps a movie like Walk The Line.  (disclaimer: WTL was my step brother's first movie role and our family was really rooting for the pic to go down in Academy award history.  Reese still looks like a lock for best actress.  It would be an outrage to pick a transexual over June Carter.)

Using -- and Abusing -- Our Troops

"People, people, get a grip - it's just a cartoon, for heaven's sake."

Update: (If you were looking for something on the Mohammed cartoon furor this contains points hard to argue with.  The other cartoon furor is over here.)

Save the Whales update

"Tokyo says its program is needed to establish reliable information on whale populations and habits -- data Japan says can only be gleaned by killing the animals."

We can only hope that these Japanese bureaucrats don't do consulting work for the US Census Bureau.
