Fiction, fiction, and more fiction...
Yesterday I wrote a letter to the News & Record about an incorrect news item, and other comments about racist policies. I'll let you know if they dare to print it.
Last night I finished reading the fifth-grade level book; "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" took me less than a day to read it. Every time I delve into a good book (I am awfully fond of fantasy and Sci-Fi) I wish I was a writer. I guess you could say that I am, although I haven't been paid for any of it. I have yet to write a novel. I do it because I want to help the local music scene, or there is an issue I want to go on about in the newspaper.
I don't have much time to read at my leisure or paint very often, but when I do it is very satisfying. I'm partial to books over movies, but somehow I end up reading a book because of a movie I saw. Case in point, the Harry Potter books. That's how I became an Anne Rice fan as well.
During Thanksgiving, my brother-in-law treated the family to the extended version of The Lord of the Rings I. I've already seen both the first and second ones as soon as they came out in the theatres, and they were wonderful. It was interesting hearing all of the discussion about the parts that my husband wished they hadn't cut. I have not read these books yet. My brother-in-law has friends in the Lord of the Rings fan club who are listed in the credits. He is so proud.
Ed Cone wrote an interesting column, A geek's guide to Middle Earth. It's a good discussion about the depth of characters. Here is another analysis of THe Lord of the Rings, and culture today: Tolkien Picks Up A Few More Bits Of Cultural Baggage
Good writers, like good teachers and psychologists, have my utmost admiration. Perhaps I will become one of them.
