Increasing Risk with Blackberry and Cell Phone Loss

Because many of these devices entered companies and governments informally, protection against lost information may not be formal:
Lost a BlackBerry? Data Could Open A Security Breach . The ability to carry vast amounts of data in small but easily misplaced items such as computer memory sticks and mobile e-mail devices has transformed the way Americans work, but it has also increased the risk that a forgotten BlackBerry or lost cell phone could amount to a major security breach. By Yuki Noguchi. [Technology - Industry News, Policy, and Reviews]

I hadn't realized that some devices could be erased remotely. How thoroughly?

The funny anecdote: on eBay, a financial employee sells a second-hand blackberry with information in it.

Even though it's almost 9 PM I need to create a meeting agenda tonight.

Encryption Standards?

We'll probably see more articles like this:
Oracle's encryption not secure, researcher says. The standard encryption method used by Oracle's database products can be easily circumvented, according to German security expert Alexander Kornbrust, who plans to present his findings at the Black Hat USA 2005 security conference this week. [Computerworld News]
To avoid relying on their black box, we need to know the standards we need for our encryption. Several email programs, like MS Outlook, offer encryption but I haven't research it to know if a DIY solution is better. DIY, is not strictly "do it yourself" but rely on an algorithm that's been vetted or selected by the best in encryption.
