I've got
pics from last Friday's hot Stammer. Hostess extraordinaire Mz Julee, accompanied by John Swails on keyboard, opened with two spoken word pieces. It worked really well, and John ended up accompanying several other people through the night. There was, in fact, a lot of fine music this time, from John, funk keyboardist/vocalist Corey Parker and, at the end, Lactose Cuervo.
Dasan Ahanu was a standout in the unaccompanied reading (Bob Dylan, via the magic of a boombox, accompanied Jeff Martin) and John Swails unaccompanied singing was a revelation. There was a good open mic set after the break, with Langston Fuze, Sister Rhonda Reese, and Sherri Lifesaver doing specially standout jobs. Newcomers (at least to me) John Metcalf, Benita Beyoung (I'm really not sure I've got that name right) and Rob Knebel (nor that one) got good receptions from the sizable audience.
Sonnets, despite the name, don't get along very well with improvised music, so I did things all by my lonesome — and I sold two chaps. Pretty cool.
