Take a look at the article called KernelThread Examines Extensible Firmware And Open Firmware at MacSlash and the links its referring to. Quite technical, but still, Solaris admins used the mechanism for a lot of things, like sending parameters to the boot process, for example. If you should have messed up your /etc/system in Solaris, you are able to tell the init process to disregard it and use another.
