"Google your Inbox" [Jon Udell's O'Reilly Column]

I just read about ZOË on Jon's Radio. It's an email proxy that you can use to build a useful search index into your email (in and out). This brings back memories of the ideas we kicked around at Lucent when I consulted there on the Zingo wireless portal. We needed an effective means to search email archives from a mobile device, but also we were concerned about notification and intelligent filtering, both to avoid bombarding mobiles with too many messages and to address the problem of information overload.

This whole issue of filtering email is an emotive one. I'm one of those guys who can not answer a ringing telephone at home (drive's other people crazy - "...but it might be an emergency..."). Sometimes you just have to let things go, and that's true with email. But we need intelligent ways of hiding stuff we don't need to see. Viewed like an information theory problem, we have to have intelligence on both ends of the pipe. This is something I have been thinking about recently with wireless - how to let the sender add their own filtering for you. Sounds strange! I'll write more on this later.......

Wireless Java Messaging [Micro Java Network]

The guys at Softwired AG have some interesting technology to enable JMS to extend to mobile devices. Makes a lot of sense as it abstracts the mobile device to just another destination on the messaging bus and provides a more integrated programming model for server applications.

Things going through my mind are where could this fit in a peer-to-peer model and I would just love to play with this in the Groove space: but I don't have time :(

I haven't come across any of the UK mobile operators looking at this technology but I bet that RIM and Palm are working on it right now. Might it fit into their plans to work with BEA Weblogic Server?
