SOAP on a rope

I've been wondering why so many SMS bureaus are now offering SOAP interfaces to submit text messages when they only seem to have typically very few messages in their vocabulary. What was wrong with good old HTTP GET with the few parameters in the URL? Might be a good idea (maybe) if there were a standard messaging vocabulary in the XML, but I'm not sure if one is being promoted across all mobile operators at the moment, but then "standards" tracking is getting increasingly difficult in this field. OPerators all seem to be going down the HTTP route for bulk messaging instead of native SMSC connections using something like SMPP.

I'm still trying to make my mind up where the various web services tranche of technologies best fit in mobile applications. It seems one has to discern genuine usage from vogue usage. Mayank Prakash has commented on some of the finer points in thinking when/how to deploy SOAP.
