For the curious- This was the type of pottery I was doing in grad school at Utah State University. I did soda fired pots with copper work, and other media. When time and space permit, I'd like to do that as well as my current work. How does the grad stuff lead into "Containers of Information?" Well, during my grad time I also made scroll covers, pin hole cameras and albums, an orrery, a telescope, and some other information containing pieces. I also made handouts for the classes I taught, you can download them for free, but they are made out of paper :-) 9:54:21 PM |

Open Label Project, part VII- Making Labels and Pots (and computer graphics.) While obvious, it is interesting to note that how one makes the label effects it look, and what pots it would go with. If one uses a computer applications such as the Gimp, Photoshop. I think the graphic would look extra 'clean' and sharp. Even if one tries to roughen it up a bit woh some of the various tool, it doesn't look quite like it was done by hand. (That is not to say one can't do 'clean' stuff by hand.) As an aside, I think these computer
apps have a certain look to them. Because they build up their
image with various layers, the end product looks that way. The
parts of the graphic do no seem to flow into each other as naturally as
hand done work can. These applications are sophisticated, so I
think it may be due to the creator using the apps in a simple
fashion. Further, it has become a popular style.
So a computer generated label has a certain, clean, look, that I think would go better with a similar pot, and not, say with a loosely thrown, crusty, wood fired piece. Of course, the exception could be a valid artistic statement as well. 6:45:47 AM |
