Letters on Clay- Pete Anderson at PBA Pottery uses letter press pieces to put messages on his pottery. He has also has used stencils to good effect. The text is not mere surface decoration, the pieces very much frame the text. The form is in balance with the words. Subject matter varies, from things he wants to say, to that of his commissioning customers. My favorite: To be candid, I'm not sure what it says, but I do
know that this piece represents one of the first times that I used impressed
text without spaces between the words.
Pete's pots are mostly straight ahead pottery, bowls, plates/platters,
that sort of thing. The text seems to be mostly quotes, and not
directly related to the pieces, except in the most general,
abstract way. However, the text does give the piece
meaning. The ceramic object is not just a frame for the
words. It does join with the text to become a single piece with
both meaning and form.Text Globe 6:51:58 AM |
