EduResources Weblog--Higher Education Resources Online
This weblog focuses on locating, evaluating, discussing, and providing guidelines to instructional resources for faculty and students in higher education. The emphasis is on free, shared, HE resources. Related topics and news (about commercial resources, K-12 resources, T&D resources, educational technology, digital libraries, distance learning, open source software, metadata standards, cognitive mapping, etc.) will also be discussed--along with occasional excursions into more distant miscellaneous topics in science, computing, and education. The EduResources Weblog operates in conjunction with a broader weblog called The Open Learner about using open knowledge resources across a diversity of subjects, levels, and interests for a wide range of learners and learning communities--students in schools and colleges, home schoolers, hobbyists, vocational learners, retirees, and others.

UCCP is a valuable resource for students (and teachers) who need college prep and advanced placement materials.  The Open Access online resources could also be useful as supplementary materials for students who are affiliated with regular classroom courses. Registration is required to access the materials. The UCCP courses that I sampled were extremely well organized and well presented, some with enhanced multimedia features. Textbooks must be purchased to fully benefit from the courses. The site is still under development, so additional courses and linked resources should be added in the future.  The courses currently available are Algebra, Calculus, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, US History, US Government, and Psychology.  ____JH

"Welcome to UCCP Open Access!  Here you will find world class UCCP courses freely available for students and educators to use as supplemental or complementary material.  You can easily move through an entire UCCP course from start to finish, or a teacher can send students to an open course to provide them with additional learning opportunities. "

"Welcome to UC College Prep Online, a statewide initiative of the University of California.  UCCP develops and distributes high-quality courses and course content to benefit California students, with a special emphasis on helping underserved students prepare for college eligibility.

Beginning this academic year (2007), UCCP will make its best course content freely available to California students and teachers.  At the same time, UCCP is developing exciting new online content and courses from the various UC campuses, programs and resources for use online and in schools.

UCCP currently offers students, educators and schools access to its content through digital lessons, open courses, and licensed courses.  Instructed courses will be available for the spring 2008 semester:

  • Digital Lessons, or learning objects, are online lessons extracted from UCCP’s high quality multimedia courses.  Students can access these dynamic lessons to enhance their learning and educators can use digital lessons to complement their instruction.
  • Open Courses are UCCP courses without assessments that are openly available for students and educators to use as supplemental study or complementary teaching material.  A student can go through the entire course if they wish.  Open Courses do not include instruction or course credit.
  • Licensed Courses are complete UCCP courses with assessments that can be licensed by a school or school district and placed on the school or district's learning management system for the purpose of instructing students online using the school's or district's teachers.
  • Instructed Courses are UCCP courses that may be instructed for credit statewide by UCCP partners.  These courses will be accepted by the University of California as UCCP courses.  This option will become available for spring 2008 semester.  Please check back at this web site for more information."
