The nine companies promoting Blu-ray Disc technology--a next-generation recordable DVD format using blue-violet lasers--announced Thursday that licensing will begin Feb. 17. Blu-ray Disc technology allows for 27GB storage capacities on a single-sided 12cm disc. DVDs hold 4.7GB of data. Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, Sony and Thomson are known as the "Blu-ray Disc Founders" and have been pursuing a broad acceptance of the format.
Blu-ray technology uses a short-wavelength blue-violet laser instead of the red lasers in current optical drives to read data off discs. The higher-capacity Blu-ray discs will enable the recording of high-definition broadcasts, which offer better picture quality than the more broadly available TV broadcasts.

No doubt that the latest Mac OS X Finder in Jaguar is a tremendous improvement over previous versions, but do you find the Mac OS X Finder a little limiting? Do you still find it slow, simplistic and lacking many powerful features? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you will be thrilled to hear that after spending extremely long hours rewriting the Finder, we have come up with the killer solution that everybody has been waiting for!
Today, CocoaTech and YazSoft are extremely proud and excited to announce the immediate availability of Path Finder 2.1; the most powerful, most complete Finder ever written for Mac OS X. We give you a Finder on major steroids. Path Finder has all the default functionality of the standard Mac OS X Finder, but also packs tons of additional must-have features not found anywhere else. This site's goal is to become a valuable resource for Macromedia Director Developers.
As a start we have put together a complete list of Xtras currently available for Director, a list of useful books for developers and a collection of useful links related to our favorite software.
Near term features of the site will include tutorials, code samples, open source movies, and forums for developers.

The OSControl Xtra adds a couple of long awaited member types to Macromedia Director: boxes, dropdown lists/popup menus, contextual menus, scroll bars, push buttons, bevel buttons, progress bars, 'little arrow'-buttons, sliders, radio buttons and checkboxes.
Unlike Director's built-in controls and Flash MX's UI Components, OSControls all are drawn in the OS appearance as set by the user. These controls are truly cross-platform: on a Macintosh they look and behave like real Macintosh controls, on a PC running Windows they look and behave like real Windows controls. The OSControl Xtra is ideal for rapid prototyping, making 'real' looking cross platform applications and many other Director projects.
