No Matter What I Do...
I've been pretty tolerant of the ads GeoCities has placed on my pages over the years because they were far less intrusive than at other free sites. Unfortunately, as of today that has changed. They'd already gone to text-only paid contextual ads which beat all the ad-blocking software I've got but this full-column sidebar thing sucks. At least the first text ads were in those little banners that fold themselves up—and we got a kick out of how we got so many ads on my home page for hotels in Des Moines, Iowa when we actually live in Des Moines, Washington.
But now I figure that if they're going to take up that much screenspace I should get a cut of the take from the ads! This new annoyance does seem to be specific to Internet Explorer though—yet another reason to use another browser!
Well, I've been figuring that it's about time to get my own domain anyway since it looks like the budget will finally support that within the next month or two. It was annoying enough when GeoCities quit letting me use FTP and forced me to upload dozens of files with the File Manager instead, but totally intrusive ads are the last straw. (Though the last couple times I've needed to update a page, even the File Manager didn't work so I had to paste the code into the edit window instead.)
While checking out the scope of the "damage" to my site, I was at least relieved to note that the ads showing up on my page about some local shootings are of the default "upgrade to paid Yahoo" variety. But how long will it be until ads for guns, lawyers, funeral homes, etc. start showing up there? The potential for tasteless and offensive advertising there is mind boggling. What is also mind boggling is the fact that neither of the alleged killers in the two different cases has gone to trial yet—3½ years later.
