New Year's Resolutions

I suppose that we make them to break them. Anyway, here are mine for 2003:

  1. To find my true career path and not have my life ruled by a timesheet. I'm sick of my worth being measured in six minute increments.
  2. To not bring my daily frustrations home to dump on my family.
  3. To get us into a bigger house. Once you have a teenager, there's just never enough room.
  4. To take up playing the trumpet on a serious basis again.
  5. To learn to play the guitar.
  6. To learn to savor the year. Sometimes I'm just so busy, one season runs into the next. Before I realize it, Spring has turned into Fall.
  7. To take my son on a "really cool" vacation.
  8. To haul that telescope out that I paid all that money for and finally use it.
  9. To stop sweating the small stuff (yeah, I know, its all small stuff).
  10. To lose 30 pounds (and not regain it like I did this year).
  11. To finally make a contribution to this planet that really matters.
  12. And, last but not least, to update my weblog every day.

Well, we'll tally up the score at the end of the year and see where things stand.

Here's to all the gifts that take us unawares

Here's a poem by Brendan Kennelly to end the old year and bring in the new, with thanks to Carolyn Farrar from the Post-Careerist newsgroup:

The Gift

It came slowly,
Afraid of insufficient self-content
Or some inherent weakness in itself
Small and hesitant
Like children at the tops of stairs
It came through shops, rooms, temples,
Streets, places that were badly-lit.
It was a gift that took me unawares
And I accepted it.

Yes, I Know It's Tuesday!

PromoGuy's Monday Mission 2.52

1. Which Blog post of yours was one of your favorites of 2002?

Hey, come on! I'm still trying to figure out how to work this thing!

2. Were there any "old acquaintances" that should be forgot this year?

I already ditched those jerks a couple of years ago.

3. Did you finish what you started last week?

Unfortunately, no.

4. Will you be doing anything to celebrate "New Year's Eve?" Any traditional food or drinks you associate with "New Year's?"

I'm sitting here and it's noontime on New Year's Eve and I still have no friggin' idea what we're doing.

5. What was the coolest present you got this year?

They were all cool.

6. The day after Christmas, around 3pm, I drove by a car where the driver and his passenger were each drinking a beer; there was no mistake about it. I was shocked, because I'd never seen anyone actually do this. And wasn't sure what I should do about it. What would you do in the same situation?

I'd call the police on my cellphone and give them the location and the license number of the car.

7. Have you ever driven a car while drinking alcohol? Ever driven drunk or known anyone who has? How'd that turn out?

I don't really want to go there. See answer to number 2 above.

Bonus: Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated?

I don't know. Why does a dog . . . .

Today's Comment Question: How ya like me now?

Not sure, still working that one out.
