The Value of ZopeIf you really want to appreciate the value of Zope, answer a bid for consulting services.I'm knee-deep in such an endeavor, which I have always had a perverse joy in working on. When someone writes a bid, they are defining value based on what they're willing to pay for. Based on these requirements, it is really astonishing how much serious machinery Zope already provides. And not just provides, but provides in a platform-style way, where integrators can adapt and extend based on customer requirements.
At the same time, such a process also defines places that Zope needs to improve
to be more competitive in winning business. Alas, there's a rub here: an important
chunk of the open source "itch" is disconnected from market forces. A developer
simply wants to add, for example, restructured text support. They don't want to
tackle "integrate with web services", which is vague, architectural, and can't
reasonably be done in the small window of time they might have available. |
