Guardian: "An 'epidemic of poverty' in Britain is having a dramatic impact on the survival rates and health chances of children from poor families, an influential coalition will warn this week in a major report that casts doubt on government efforts to close the inequality gap.
End Child Poverty, a 130-strong network of children's charities, church groups, unions and think-tanks, claims that the gap between rich and poor represents a 'huge injustice' in British society and has become one of the major factors affecting child mortality rates."

And some people are thinking of making this bank holiday a Britishness Day!

ScottishSocialistParty: "Why is the wealth gap between rich and poor growing wider by the minute?
Can the multinationals be tamed? Can we make poverty history without making capitalism history? And if we want to change the world, where do we begin?
In clear, jargon-free prose, Two Worlds Collide grapples with the questions mainstream politicians dare not ask.
This challenging pamphlet - written by Alan McCombes and published by the Scottish Socialist Party in 2005 - is still essential reading for all those determined to Make Poverty History."

TheRealMcCain: "The REAL McCain is a multimillionaire who owns ten luxurious homes. The REAL McCain backs President Bush's tax cuts for big corporations. The REAL McCain empathizes only with the interests of our nation's wealthy minority, not its money-strapped majority. But far too many are buying into McCain's deceit because the corporate press won't present the whole picture, so we created this video to educate the public about the REAL McCain."

Guardian: "While clashes in remote Helmand dominate the headlines, another battle is being waged by the insurgents on Kabul's doorstep. There, the Taliban are winning support by building a parallel administration, which is more effective, more popular and more brutal than the government's."

ImpeachPlay: "During Shirley Golub's primary challenge against Nancy Pelosi a couple of months ago, a valiant band of thespians staged a full theatrical production of an impeachment play. The video of that historic performance is now available for viewing in its entirety on this site."

NationalSecurityArchive: "The U.S. intelligence community buckled sooner in 2002 than previously reported to Bush administration pressure for data justifying an invasion of Iraq, according to a documents posting on the Web today by National Security Archive senior fellow John Prados.

The documents suggest that the public relations push for war came before the intelligence analysis, which then conformed to public positions taken by Pentagon and White House officials. For example, a July 2002 draft of the 'White Paper' ultimately issued by the CIA in October 2002 actually pre-dated the National Intelligence Estimate that the paper purportedly summarized, but which Congress did not insist on until September 2002.

A similar comparison between a declassified draft and the final version of the British government's 'White Paper' on Iraq weapons of mass destruction adds to evidence that the two nations colluded in the effort to build public support for the invasion of Iraq. Dr. Prados concludes that the new evidence tends to support charges raised by former White House press secretary Scott McClellan and by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in its long-delayed June 2008 'Phase II' report on politicization of intelligence."

PRWatch: "The U.S. military is in the process of hiring a public relations firm, to help it carry out 'information operations' in Iraq, 'to counter insurgent misinformation tactics'. An Army public affairs officer said the goal of the work is to communicate 'with people in Iraq in as many ways [as] possible what we're trying to do to help them, and what we're trying to do to prevent people from using these ruthless roadside bombs that blow up people in streets, in schools, and synagogues.' The one-year contract may be extended for up to three years and cost up to $300 million."
It's like carrying coals to Newcastle.
