ever since i can remember myself thinking about cyberspace and how it affects a specific geographical area's position in the global barometer of power and creativity, i have been whinging about greece and how underdeveloped, 100% commercial shite the whole greek internet is. ISPs charge shitloads of money they don't deserve getting paid for; media concentration marches forward uninterrupted; the state of adoption and growth of open source/free software is bleak; cyber-activism is a bedtime story for would-be juvenile delinquents (with some notable exceptions like indymedia athens and thessaloniki); most web-development agencies suck and are mostly manned by unscrupulous teenagers (with some notable exceptions like datahost); crackers portary as hackers; digital art is an oxymoron; research in and about cyberspace
is virtually non-existent at most greek universities; government policy and regulation are harmful and idiotic; and the general awareness of the effect of cyberspace on society is limited. that's my view. and is not likely to change soon.

but there is hope. i just came into contact with the ideas and projects fostered by Fournos, which is a centre for art and new technologies in athens, and medi@terra- the leading greek yearly event on digital civilisation and culture.lots of food for thought and some fascinating artwork, installations, performances, and short essays. many thanks to Mihalis the "director" for introducing me to Fournos and Medi@terra and for giving me the Medi@terra 2000 publication. good to know something goo, innovative, crazy, and inspiring is on the works.
