Medical Diagnostic Images on Any Computer

Hospitals are investing money in a new type of digital image x-ray.  Radiologists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have devised a way to view an xray, MRI or CT Scan on a regular PC at very high resolution in seconds.

How is this possible when thus far this was only possible on high power, $80,000 workstations? The technology developed functions like streaming audio or video technology that allows you to listen or view the file that you are downloading while the file transfer is in progress. In this case, the technology delivers only the amount of information that the bandwidth can handle but it also delivers the specific information that the user wants to look at.

This allows images to be reviewed anywhere in the hospital. The technology is so successful that the University of Pittsburgh started a company (Stentor) to further develop and market the process. They also attracted investment from IBM,  the US Air Force and approximately 150 other hospitals.
