Maillot Jaune

The overall leader of the Tour de France is the maillot jaune. This honor is determined after the opening stage. This stage was held last Saturday, July 2nd. David Zabriskie, Utah native, Team CSC cyclist, won this opening time trial, beating Lance Armstrong by 2 seconds. So Zabriskie is the maillot jaune and has been for the first three stages. Pretty cool.

Zabriskie has been interviewed after every stage by the OLN (Outdoor Life Network) staff and is fun to watch. He doesn't say much, keeping his responses measured and short. On Sunday I was pleased to see Zabriskie's picture and story prominently featured on the sports page of my local newspaper. One would think that this was a singular event. Perhaps. But Zabriskie won the Individual Time Trial, not just the prologue, at the Giro d'Italia held last May.

Dave Zabriskie finished a couple of hours back at the Giro. He doesn't have much of a chance to make an impact the the Tour de France, at least as far as the General Classification is concerned. He won't be the maillot jaune in Paris on July 24th. But it's quite spectacular for him to spend three days in the yellow jersey............
