Every software product has two kinds of customers. Those who purchase the product are one group. These are the product’s external customers. Another group is the colleagues who will stake their careers on its success. These are the product’s internal customers. Every code module, specification, and prototype will either be supported and championed by key staff, or left to fend for itself. Every failure in software development can be traced to not satisfying the needs of external and/or internal customers. Every success can be credited to satisfying both.
