Is You Wicked?
Maureen Dowd in the New York Times has discovered the not too subtle humour of Ali G. (via Karlin)
This article did give me a chuckle - more so because we have had Ali G over here for years and I have his movie on DVD. The American version is being shown here on Channel 4, and many of the interviews Dowd mentions I have seen - and loved.
Indeed in some ways Ali G has become a part of conversation and culture, just as the Simpsons affects things. One borrowed from Ali G, that I hear used in many conversations by English people is: 'Is it cuz I is black?' When feeling agrieved say that in the UK and most people will understand the Ali G reference.
I'm glad to see he is doing well in the States, many here felt the accent might throw the Americans off, but if it has been a hit in the schoolyard...
James Woolsey was good-natured when Ali G brought up the grassy knoll and asked, "Who shot J. R.?" Richard Thornburgh was patient when Ali G misinterpreted the meaning of hung juries. And Brent Scowcroft didn't flinch when Ali G asked him, "Did they ever catch the people who sent Tampax through the mail?"
"It was anthrax," Mr. Scowcroft corrected pleasantly.
Ali G is wicked. And to him, that's a compliment.
