Jonathan Yardley on the King James Bible: It is no exaggeration to say, as Nicolson does, that over the centuries the King James Bible came "to seem like the language spoken by God." Its influence upon writers and orators was incalculable: "Lincoln's Gettysburg address . . . would have been impossible without the King James Bible." So too would have been the incomparable oratory -- far and away the greatest, in English, of the 20th century -- of Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King Jr. When I read encomia to the King James version--which I accept as accurate, though I don't feel qualified to judge myself--I often wonder if there are comparably esteemed versions in other languages.
